Dr. Edmund Ek is a specialist in Plastic and Reconstructive surgery, with a specific interest in Breast Reconstruction. He is passionate about helping restore his patients' quality of life – especially if they have just undergone a devastating diagnosis and treatment.
If your breasts have lost their symmetry or shape following a lumpectomy or mastectomy, Breast Reconstruction is an effective way of restoring them.
If you have a mastectomy planned, it may also be possible to schedule your Breast Reconstruction to happen at the same time.
Please call (03) 8419 0900 to enquire about flap or breast implants reconstruction, discuss the cost involved, or to book an appointment with Dr. Ek in Melbourne.
Determining whether surgery is a viable option will be a decision that you, your loved ones and Dr. Ek will have to make together. In most cases where there are no confounding factors, Reconstruction surgery may be suggested to occur at the same time as your mastectomy, however if you are undergoing chemotherapy or radiotherapy, the surgery may have to be postponed.
Dr. Ek will take great time and care to assess your needs and work out the best possible course of action for you. This is at all stages a collaborative process – Dr. Ek will listen tirelessly to your input while offering his expert opinion when necessary.
He will also provide photos of past patients to help you visualise what results might be possible, and he will answer any questions you or your loved ones have.
There are two common Breast Reconstruction techniques:
A portion of your own body tissue (usually taken from your lower abdomen, like a tummy tuck) will be attached to the chest to simulate the breast. This usually involves complex microsurgery to create a healthy, natural appearing breast.
An implant is used to simulate the breast. Dr. Ek’s breast implants reconstruction in Melbourne requires less surgery and recovery time than flap reconstruction. Breast implants are filled with silicone gel or saline and can restore a silhouette similar to what you had before lumpectomy or mastectomy.
DDr. Ek will help you choose which procedure to go with, based on your preferences, the shape of the remaining breast (if applicable) and your overall body shape.
The flap and breast implants reconstruction surgery usually takes 2-3 hours and is performed under general anaesthetic in our Melbourne clinic.
Breast Reconstructive surgery is a safe and commonly performed procedure with a high success rate.
Dr. Ek's past patients have overwhelmingly reported positive results in both physical appearance and improved self-esteem and confidence.
